Carley's Sulfate free BODY WASH

  • 14oz bottle of body wash
  • Sulfate free
  • Our natural soap in a body wash

Since our first year, 1999, we've had thousands of requests for a true natural body wash. My answer was always the same: until we can make one as good or better than our natural soap, why bother? I pretty much gave up for years. Every time we tried the results were ok, but not good enough.

In October I attended a 'natural' products work shop. They did a body wash there that wasn't bad. It used a so called natural soap as a base. Decyl glucoside. That has a nice warm sound to it, doesn't it? Decyl glucoside is a supposedly naturally derived liquid soap base, that is sulfate free. Problem was it still smelled like the artificial soaps I just can't stand. I decided to try again using our natural soap as a base.

5 pound test batches.

We use a spread sheet when working on new products. We just keep making 5 pound test batches until they are right. Then we make larger and larger test batches constantly adjusting ingredients until we are up to production volume. So for almost 3 months we have been making 5 pound batches of the body wash. Somewhere between 25 and 50 batches we began to realize this wasn't going to be easy. Just tiny percentages of certain ingredients made huge differences. And what worked at 5 pounds didn't work for bigger batches. We almost gave up a few times. But I'm glad we didn't. This is indeed as good as our natural soap. Perhaps even bit better.

So if you like our natural soap, should you get this?
Maybe. You won't save any money over just using our natural soap. But if you love the convenience of a liquid soap, chances are you will love this. I believe it is more moisturizing. Personally I never thought I would say this, but I like it better.

Can I indeed use this all over?
Yes some of our test subjects even used it for a shampoo and loved it.

Ingredients in order of prominence.

Reverse Osmosis purified water: virtually all skin care products 'say' they use purified water. But the real deal is reverse osmosis purified water. This mean ZERO contaminants which means the starting point is pure. It's expensive to do (goes through 5 filters, which have to be changed often), but it is the only water we use. We use the waste water from this purifying process to water our flowers and landscaping. So there is no waste. Don't some products use distilled water? Yes but distilled water is expensive to make (heat is used to boil the dirty water and stream is collected). But the real problem we have with distilled water is it has a lower pH due to the extra ions added during the process. We prefer to work with pH neutral water. To me there is no more perfect water than R-O water. I remember the 1st time we made soap with it. As we poured the soap it was so creamy! It looked like home made ice cream right before it gets solid. It's one of our special secrets to how good our products are.

We had to make the soap that goes into this, two different ways. The process is much more complex than our bar soap.

Our natural soap is made with:

Coconut oil, Olive oil, Rice bran oil, and Soybean oil. What made this so difficult is the percentage of oils varied from our bar soap.

Apricot Kernal oil is used as a skin softener and isn't converted to soap. We use a lot of it. In this particular application we found it to be the best skin conditioner.

Xanthan Gum: This is a vegetable derived thickener to make the body wash a bit thicker. True natural liquid soaps tend to be very thin. Not pleasing. A tiny amount goes a long way.

Natural Essential oils. No artificial smells here.

Glycerin (vegetable). What skin care product doesn't benefit from Glycerin? Problem is most store bought and even high end moisturizers use animal derived Glycerin. You don't even want to know how they make this glycerin. Unless the label specifically says vegetable it is almost always animal derived. Yuck!

99.6% of this product is natural. But we have to use a preservative.

Germall Plus (4/10’s of 1%) (diazolidinyl Urea, 3-Iodo-2-propylbutylcarbarmate) (a vegetable derived preservative to keep our product fresh) only needs 4/10's of one percent to keep our product safe. Look before you ask, no totally natural preservative really protects products from bacteria. We don't like using Parabens. and since we pH balance our moisturizers we are limited in our choice of preservatives. What's great about this one is so little is needed to afford protection.

Best if used within one year of receipt. I'll bet no skin care product you have bought from a store was made within the last year. Most of the products were made years ago. We find we can better control our quality if we make products as they are used. Fresh just makes for better skin care products. Our families all use our products. We only sell what we would use.

No animal ingredients or testing EVER! We also get assurances from our suppliers that all of our raw ingredients are not animal derived or any animal testing done there either.

Most skin care products you buy to use today, were made in large factories years ago and have been in storage. Everything we ship was made in small batches within a few weeks of shipping. Fresh matters! Quality ingredients matter!

Most of our ingredients are as close to natural as possible. We avoid overly processed ingredients. Processing means heat and that destroys the goodness in these precious ingredients we use.

This stuff is fantastic and smells amazing! I don't have any detailed feedback other than this is an awesome body wash. The formula is definitely different from traditional liquid body wash (it's a little grainy), but it makes for an awesome shaving cream! :) Absolutely love this product and would recommend to anyone. My only suggestion for others is to use this with a non-cotton body cloth. Something woven and/or made out of nylon. I found when I used this wash with a cotton wash cloth, it wouldn't lather very mush and leave a silky smooth feeling on the cloth, but when using with something non-cotton, it lathers nicely and stays that way throughout washing. Would purchase again.

I really like this product. It lathers nice and has a clean scent too. After using my skin feels soft and clean without residue or feeling dried out.

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS. I live in a very dry part of the country, and winters are particularly cruel to the skin. I have tried several high end natural and organic brands of soaps and cleansers, and this one just blew past them all. The others, though formulated with quality ingredients, couldn't touch this one. A little does go a very long way, I've had mine for two months and I'm not even half way through it, and I use way more than I need to (love it that much). It is a bit granulated but this doesn't effect it at all. Very nice citrus scent, though it doesn't last. Low lather. Great to shave with. I can step out of the shower and not need to put lotion, doesn't make the skin tight at all. An absolute winner and winter essential.

I received this a while back, sorry I just got the chance to write the review. Thanks for sending a full size for me to try out after I had some problem with dryness with the bar soap. I love the scent. It is kind of like orange flavored Starburst. First used on my face, it kind of burns (probably from the essential oil) but it works great and very moisturizing. However, I think it is better if you offered it with the same type of cap as the acne treatment rather than a pump head because it does not work that well. Funny side story, the bar soap no longer dries my skin out after I received a new batch of them. Not sure if you have changed anything? So I went back to just using the bar soap after I ran out of this body wash. I love this for the scent.

I love this wash and it's fragrance! I learned however, to shake the bottle vigorously before each use, as it settles and would be very difficult to pump when the bottle got down to about 1/3 left. SHAKE IT WELL and you'll get a nice creamy handful each pump. This leaves my skin so soft after rinsing off, that even on the days I am in a hurry and forget to use the Kukui body lotion after drying off, my skin is still soft later that day! I have started using this wash for shaving and I have never had a better shave! Thanks for making such a wonderful wash!

We understood when we were making this body wash that it wouldn't be perfect for every type of water. Very hard water, mostly those from personal wells are going to be difficult for this body wash. If you constantly are seeing brown stains in your sinks and toilets. Those are iron stains and are a sign of very hard water. This body wash is natural soap. Not a detergent. Most body washes are detergents. Similar to the stuff you wash your clothes with. If your water is extremely hard, I wouldn't suggest this product. But I would suggest you consider a water treatment system. thanks

I got an email from Carley's advertising this new product. I thought, Great! I use the bar soap offered by Carley's, I've been using them for 5 years now, so I figured this would be even better based on the previous reviewer said. I too don't wash my skin so much do to drying out. Well, I can say this product is less than stellar. When I wash my skin with the bar soap, I don't get dried out nearly as bad as I do with this stuff =(. Washing with a wash cloth? Forget about it. Carley's makes a lot of hits, but this one is a miss. I do like the citrus scent however. The dryness is almost like a sticky dryness and lotion makes it better. (Hard to explain.)

Hey, you sent this to me in my gift package for doing a Youtube video. It made me raise an eyebrow because I was certain this was a new product and not on the website at the time I received it. Well, if you needed a guinea pig you found on in me and let me tell you; you knocked this one right out of the park! Let it be my little known secret, but I'm not one to use soap on my body all that often because most of it sucks (not yours) and just dries my skin out. Not to mention water is plenty good to wash up. But, this stuff is something I look forward to using in the shower. It makes my skin feel better than any blasted lotion could ever dream to, and it's soap! This soap is more moisturizing than dunking yourself in a vat of Aveeno. And the scent is light and citrusy (my favorite scent). It's the equivalent of giving your body its morning OJ. Screw lotion, this is all I need.
