This is our story:
I remember it well. It was back in the late 1990’s. A lot of people in my family, including me, were suffering from acne. Every product we tried worked for a while but then stopped. I decided someone was missing something about acne. We noticed that the more ‘new’ acne products came on the market the worse acne seemed to get. Acne wasn’t going away at 18 like it used to. Some adults were dealing with it their whole lives. Not true 40 years ago. What happened?

We had some ideas and did a lot of testing. I hired chemists and scientists who promised to look at this whole issue a bit differently. I wanted to know why so many adults had acne today. We didn’t want to copy any other products. A really unique product that was affordable was our goal. After a year of research, we started selling Clear & Smooth in October of 1999.

To get people to try an unknown product, we did something no one had ever done with skin care products. A NO TIME LIMIT GUARANTEE. We were that confident we had something special. Plus we didn’t want people rushing into this.

We decided to open things up and really communicate with our customers. When we failed we admitted it and tried to improve. Our customers helped us find the right combination of ingredients and methods of use. We now consider our customers suggestions and ideas a valuable resource. We keep improving the product. Even though we have a no time limit guarantee, our refund rate runs around 1%.

Most tell us our products are life changing. Yet very affordable. People ask me all the time, aren’t you worried some big company will steal your formula? Nope! The big boys have all bought bottles to test. But they don’t get it. What we do cannot be duplicated in a big factory. Let me better explain.

The skin care industry today is a mess.
If you study their ingredients, pretty much all these products they are selling is the same thing. The real costs you are paying for is not the product but the advertising. And the middle men.

Every skin product produced today is made to have a pretty package and a long shelf life. Even so called all natural ones. A few large factories make all the products today for all the name brands. The ingredients are delivered in railroad tanker cars and are mostly chemicals whose real ingredients are secret. This is why you cannot pronounce most of the ingredients. They paid off politicians to put this loophole in the law.

These big companies make millions of bottles at a time. And then store them for years until sold. It’s highly profitable to do it this way. But these long shelf lives, heavy use of acids and the strong preservatives they have to use, means they can’t use the best ingredients to get your skin healthy.

We decided to think small. Fresh products with personal service. No big retails chains to tell us what to make. If the customers like it they will come back and tell their friends.

We use many of the finest natural raw or virgin ingredients.

To put your mind at rest, everything is hand made in fairly small batches(under a thousand bottles at a time). All stainless steel equipment. High tech measurements are used to combined ingredients at specific temperatures precisely at certain intervals. Temperatures range from boiling to below freezing. One mis-step and everything has to be tossed. Making great skin care products is almost a lost art.

When Jennifer started her acne was severe. A month after she started, I asked her how it was going. Here is her response.

It wouldn’t be possible except, we manufacture Clear & Smooth and we market it and we ship it and handle ALL your questions(by email). And we know once we get you clear you will continue to reorder and also sample our other skin care products including make up. Of course you can just buy one bottle every 3 or 4 months, that’s up to you. We don’t keep your credit card on file and we don’t have the time to bug you to reorder.

Does your product really last 3 months?

Yes; if you are treating facial acne only. No; if you have all over body acne. You might get 1 1/2 to 2 months per bottle. Still a very good value. After your skin is under control most get longer out of each bottle.

I just want to thank you guys from the bottom of my heart! I have been using your product for almost 2 years now and its just amazing i have never seen my face look and feel so amazing. 2 years ago i broke out with really bad huge pimples after trying out Murad(tm) it was the worse i had ever seen my face i was miserable my self esteem was out the window i pretty much just wanted to lock myself home from the embarrassment. I would put piles of makeup on just to try and hide the flaws. How does your product work?

It is a gentle exfoliant used in the shower or bath. In addition to all the botanicals, there is some benzoyl peroxide to control the acne causing bacteria. We include a bar of our natural soap (which is wonderful by the way) to completely remove the benzoyl peroxide after each use. This we’ve found is an important part. We believe long term contact with ointments does work for a while but in time causes a rebound effect and eventually leads people to more acne than less.

Not all will be completely clear in three weeks (once you are clear you will stay clear), but this is a typical note we get:

Pros: Inexpensive, especially when you break the cost down over a year. Really works!! My skin has never been clearer. My skin does not “get used to” the product, causing it to stop working over time. Smells great, unlike other cleansers I have used. Moisturizer is refreshing, light, and not greasy – keeps my skin from drying, peeling, even in the winter time.

Cons: I honestly can’t think of any to put here, other than I can’t just go to the store and pick it up – but ordering online has always been a breeze and the shipments come right away!

Bottom line: I started with the regular strength in college and switched to the “Industrial strength” when that wasn’t quite doing the job for me. I am now a pregnant 27 year old, and my skin has honestly never been clearer. I know a lot of my acne was due to hormonal causes, so I was expecting my skin to get worse with pregnancy (as my sister’s had). The cleanser + all natural soap duo has been the only thing to ever work with me. I am a pharmacist and I recommend this product to people who come into my store looking for something when nothing else seems to work. The 5% wash is the same strength as the 5% prescription wash you can get in the pharmacy – plus it’s cheaper and you don’t need to visit a doctor to get it!! As with any benzoyl peroxide product, it has PEROXIDE in it, so it can and WILL bleach towels. I just usually use white wash clothes and light colored towels and I haven’t had a problem with it -well worth it to have clear skin! I buy 3 items at a time so I can get the 4th product free. I keep 1 bottle in the shower with me, which usually lasts about 3-4 months. I place the other bottles that I’m not using in the fridge to help preserve their potency. This system has allowed me to order ~ once a year, and I’ve never noticed any difference in the bottles I pull from the fridge vs. the one I use right away when it’s shipped. Bottom line: I’ve been using Carley’s for over 7 years, and I hope they never stop making it. I’d hate to have to find another product that works, smells great, and is relatively inexpensive over the course of a year.

Always with any acne (or skin care) product ask your doctor first before getting pregnant.

What about animal testing?

We never do any animal testing. And here’s the real kicker. Our suppliers also promise never to test their raw ingredients on animals. Most companies won’t make that pledge.

Any other ingredients we should worry about?
Also No PBA, No artificial fragrances. No silicones. No sulfates. No sulfur.

No Algin(sea weed), No Artificial soaps.

No Phthalates (what the heck is that? Don’t worry it isn’t in our products and you absolutely don’t want it in your body)

All this stuff is used in the products you’ve likely been using just to make it easy to produce or keep it on the store’s shelf for years.

Silicone is used to remove bubbles and foam. You might have seen it by another name(Dimethicone) as the active ingredient in GasX. You can’t make a million bottles at a time if it starts foaming. Unfortunatly Silicone is what causes products to make the skin feel greasy. So they have to add another ingredient to counteract that. And another chemical to counteract that. And it goes on and on.

Our products are hand poured and then a couple of weeks later hand topped off after the bubbles go to the top. A pain? Yes. But makes for superior products. I promise your skin will feel wonderful from the very first use.

How long does it typically take to see results?

About 1/3 see real positive results just a few days. These people are allergic to what they were using and this immediately feels like their skin has been released from it’s bondage with bad acne products. Another 1/3 see results in the 2 to 4 week range. And the last 1/3 are the hard cases. They have been using ointments and spot treatments for many many years. Constantly leaving these strong chemicals on their has numbed them to any fast healing. Most of these see clearing in the 4 to 6 week range. The fact is these people are heading towards complete burnout. They just have to bite the bullet and stick it out. Most tell us it was more than worth the wait. Because once this kicks in they will see continued results….forever.

I’m considering going to an Rx product like Accutane(c).

Reconsider. The problem with stronger treatments is that they aren’t a long term solution. Due to the dangers they present. Most won’t be able to stay on them long term. And they aren’t a quick fix either. 6 weeks is typical time it take to see clearing. And the ‘clear’ you get really isn’t the type of skin you want. Talk to anyone on those products and they will tell you their skin isn’t healthy. It is stressed and very sensitive. And scratches easily. A sure sign of an out of balance skin. Rx products treat the symptoms and not the cause.

What about Antibiotics?

Yes indeed bacteria do cause acne. But I’ve never heard of anyone who found any sort of long term relief with Antibiotics for acne. The real truth about acne is much more complicated than just killing bacteria. It’s about balancing the skin and returning it to a healthy state. And let’s face it, do you really want to continue using an antibiotic long term? Do you know what that can do to a body?

First I want to say I have waited 4 weeks to give feedback to really see how this product would work. It has been 4 weeks since my daughter started using the Face wash and soap and nothing else. My daughter is 21 and has battled moderate to almost severe acne since she was 14. We have spent thousands of dollars on dermatologist and the only thing we never tried was accutane for obvious reasons. This past Fall was one of the worst break outs my daughter suffered. She is a nursing student and the stress sent her over. Her face had all types of acne. My heart was breaking. I tried buying more over the counter stuff and tried all kinds of soap. I happened to stumble on this on EBay. I thought why not try it..nothing to lose…Well let me say I will NOT be asking for a refund and will be ordering more. My daughters face well not perfectly clear has cleared at least 80 percent. And her skin tone is beautiful! I don’t know why this stuff is not on TV. Blows *roactiv away! THANK YOU!

I am the one that wrote you about my 21 year old daughter who is a nursing student. FYI she is about 9o% clear now 🙂 anyway getting ready to order more and i love it so much i want to order a bottle for myself. i love the way it makes my skin feel. i am 47 and i do have occasional acne but its not bad. would it be ok if i ordered the industrial stuff too or should i order the other less strong one ? i really love the industrial one but don’t want to do overkill. BENZOYL PEROXIDE (active) 2%
the balance are in order of prominence

Reverse Osmosis Purified Water: When looking at other skin care products I always want to know how the water they use is purified(if at all). Is it filtered? How small a filter? Ozonated? Often the devil is in the details. We use only Reverse Osmosis purified water. Reverse Osmosis purified water is the gold standard for being clean and pure. So if we are talking microscopic differences why is it important? Reverse Osmosis water, we’ve found, works better than any other water to maximize the potential of the precious ingredients we use. It’s expensive, but we believe anything else is purely just cutting corners.

NATURAL SOAP SOLUTION: [saponified oils: coconut, olive, soybean, cottonseed], Our special formulation. Natural soaps help to clean the skin and are very gentle. ALL other acne cleanser we know of uses SLS (sodium laurel sulfates) or artificial soaps. Since millions of acne sufferers are allergic to these SLS ingredients, we believe they have no place in ANY acne product. We get amazing emails right after their first treatment. They tell us they can”t believe how wonderful their skin feels. Really clean for the first time in a long time.

Natural SHEA BUTTER; (Butyrospermum parkii) World renown for many incredible skin improving properties, but almost unheard of here in the USA. The Shea tree grows spontaneously in the wooded savannahs in west Africa (Ghana, Mali and Burkina Faso). The tree is stout, can grow up to 20 m high and its trunk can reach 1 m in diameter, bearing leathery oval leaves. It produces its first fruit when it is about 25 years old and reaches its full production at the age of 40 to 50. The fruit is harvested by the natives and hand processed to the finished butter product. Most Shea butter is commercially processed to remove the natural color and odor, or industrially extracted with hexane (a carcinogen). This yields more butter and is less expensive to produce, but it is odorless and white and has fewer of important qualities. The Shea butter we use is yellow and unrefined. Villagers in Ghana extract the nuts (which grow wild in the forest) by the traditional, solvent-free method, by grinding and heating, and pour the butter into a gourd shell. Our bottler sterilizes it and filters it. But we use no chemicals to refine it. Natural Shea butter is a VITAL INGREDIENT IN OUR PRODUCT. Read more below.

GLYCERIN ; is a humectant. This means it has the ability to draw water right from the air and bring it closer to your skin. We use a Kosher Variety made strictly from vegetables. Yes some companies use an Animal based product made from Animal Fat. Unless it says so, chances are most products have animal ingredients in them.

WALNUT SHELL POWDER, -Exfoliant, we use a special cosmetic particle size. Exfoliants remove dead skin cells and imbedded dirt in the pores. This encourages the skin to produce new skin cells.

PROPYLENE GLYCOL, -humectant, helps bring moisture to the skin. Although this product has many industrial uses, it is very common in cosmetics and is even a primary ingredient in some teeth whiteners that dentists prescribe. It is also used in cigar humidors to help hold in the moisture. (For your information: radiator coolant uses Ethylene Glycol)

APRICOT KERNAL OIL ; (Armeniaca vulgaris, Prunis armeniaca) Apricot Kernel is a light but rich oil which is especially good for sensitive skin, as well as for skin that is inflamed or dry. It can be used alone or as a massage oil and is used quite often in lip balms and creams. It is particularly helpful for dehydrated, delicate, mature or sensitive skin. It has a high vitamin A content.

STEARIC ACID : If you read labels (and since you”re reading this, you probably do), you”ll find this ingredient in many, many cosmetics and other products. It is really essential to help bind oils and waters together. Unfortunately most companies use a product made from animals. Yes most likely cows or pigs. YUCK! Plus they have to use a lot of fragrances, because that stuff stinks some kind of awful. We use a Kosher variety made strictly from vegetables. I”d like to tell you it”s a lot more expensive, but it”s really about the same price. I don”t know why they use that stuff. REALLY! Maybe it works better with Mineral oil. Who knows?

CETYL ALCOHOL -emollient, and carrying agent. This is not a grain alcohol or rubbing alcohol. This is not drying.

ALOE VERA EXTRACT, -skin softening and healing properties

CORN MEAL -we could use a chemical to do this job of helping ingredients mix properly in the manufacturing process, as most products do. But why not use something natural? Yes this is just plain old ground corn meal.

MANGO BUTTER; (Mangifera indica) A luxurious Butter imported from India made from the seeds of the Mango Fruit tree. We use this butter purely for it”s luxurious feel and absorbency. You”ll only find this is the quality stuff, it”s not cheap.

EMULSIFYING WAX NF, -this is a natural vegetable waxy binder which helps combine oils and water. Again, we could use animal based product here or Beeswax. But we have pledged not to use any animal based product.

HEMP SEED OIL; (Cannabis sativa) This is one of the more effective skin-care oils with a wonderful nutty smell. Hemp seed oil is derived from the seed of the plant Cannabis sativa, best known as the marijuana plant, and least known for its many productive uses. Hemp seed oil has none of the intoxicating properties of the leaves. Since hemp cannot be legally grown in the U.S., the supply of its oil is low and the price high. Hemp seeds produce a vegetable oil that is high in protein and can be used within a variety of foods and cosmetics. Alpha linolenic, linoleic and oleic acids–the essential fatty acids known as the omegas–make up 88% of the total fatty-acid content. Its moisturizing properties are absolutely magical. It adds important qualities that other oils are missing. Again, not a cheap product. This is not a filler.

MACADAMIA NUT OIL (Macadamia integrifolia) This tree is native to Australia. Also known as Queensland nut oil, this cold pressed oil is high in palmitoleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid that acts as an antioxidant, preventing deterioration of cell membranes. For mature skin it is hydrating and gentle. It is a skin lubricant and is easily absorbed by the skin, sometimes described as a “vanishing oil.” Helpful in cases of sunburn and wound healing. Can you see why we use it?

EVENING PRIMROSE OIL, -Works as a natural herb to help skin heal

ELDER FLOWER EXTRACT (sambucus nigra) -a natural healing Herb to help the skin repair itself. Ooh this stuff is good. Ever buy any? About $30.00 for 4 to 8 ounces if you can find it anywhere. We have a special source which provides us with a special concentrated version.

CHAMOMILE POWDER (Chamomilla recutita)-a powerful herb for skin healing, this helps reduce redness. This is another very important ingredient

NO ARTIFICIAL FRAGRANCES As of early June 2002, we have eliminated all fragrances (which are artificially made from harsh chemicals and alcohol). We are now using purepremium essential oils for a nice smell. Rather than use one, we use several to create a nice bouquet. Listed in order of their prominence.

SWEET ORANGE ESSENTIAL OIL , (Brazil)

LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL (France) We use the good stuff from France (yes the best Lavender is grown there).

YLANG YLANG ESSENTIAL OIL (Indonesia) adds a wonderful floral smell.

BERGAMOT ESSENTIAL OIL (Italy ) a different citrus smell

ROSEMARY ESSENTIAL OIL (Tunisia) Nice touch

JASMINE (India) My personal favorite. Unfortunately it costs between $800 and $1200 for 16 ounces. So we don”t use a lot, but it is very powerful and a little goes a long way.

SANDALWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL (India) WOW this stuff is expensive. We don”t use much, but a little goes a long way.

PRESERVATIVES

CITRIC ACID a natural preservative and PH balancer

SODIUM CITRATE , -preservative and PH balance

Germall Plus® We use a non-paraben bactericide & fungicide: [its two ingredients are: diazolidinyl urea, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IPDC) and contrary to internet rumors this is indeed a vegetable and chemically derived product. there are no animal ingredients in it.] Sorry natural preservatives are a nice touch as a back up, but we believe that real germ killing preservatives are necessary, when you consider this product is left in your hot wet shower all the time. We use this preservative, because such a little amount goes a long way.

You may have noticed methylparaben or propylparaben as ingredients in many products. And anything else ending in ”Paraben”. These are the most common preservatives used today. We noticed that some people with acne are allergic to them. That”s why we do not use them. Try buying anything ”Paraben free” and you”ll pay dearly for it.

Also SLS Free. Yes we use no artificial soaps, such as Sodium Laurel Sulfate. We believe about 15% of acne sufferers are allergic to these artificial soaps. Makes no sense to put them in our products.

This product is intended for external use only. We encourage you to use a lathered up wash cloth after each use.

EXPIRATION DATE . One year and 1 month from Manufacture. So usually by the time you receive your order, you will have about one year to use it. Don”t buy more than you can use in a year.
